Question

A rock of mass 2 kg is lifted straight up by a 40 N vertical, applied force. What is the magnitude of the rock’s acceleration? All answers are in ms-2. For this question, use g = 10 ms-2.

  1. Use F = ma

    Assume up is positive
    40 + 2(-10) = 2a
    a = 10 m/s²

    as the result is positive, the rock moves upward.
