light traveling horizontally proceeds through two polarizing sheets.

Question

Unpolarized light enters the first sheet which has it’s transmission axis oriented vertically. The transmitted light falls on a second sheet which has its transmission axis set at 55 degrees with respect to the first sheet. What percentage of the incident beam emerges from the second sheet?

Answer ( 1 )

  1. Since it is unpolarized so from first sheet Incident beam gets half of initial value

    I1 =I/2

    From second sheet

    I2 = I1cos255

    I2 = [0.5I] x 0.33

    I2 = 0.164 I

    So in percentage it is 16.4% of incident beam
